Frequent flooding caused by heavy rainfall has wreak havoc in Kano as
over 21 persons have been reported dead with property worth over N1.9
billion destroyed.
Investigations by The AUTHORITY revealed that about 5,300 Kano
residents had been rendered homeless by the flood, with 2,017 houses
damaged.
The disaster has also affected farming and economic activities in the metropolis as 3,803 farmlands have been washed away.
The Executive Secretary, Kano State Emergency and Rehabilitation
Agency (SERA), Alhaji Aliyu Bashir Nukkel, confirmed that property worth
over N1.9 Billion had been lost to flooding in Kano this year.
Data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) showed that
18 persons have lost their lives to flood in Kano in recent times,
while 22 local government areas have been affected in the state.
In a recent statement by the North-West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA,
Alhaji Musa Ilallah, the agency named the affected councils as Shanono,
Bagwai, Kiru, Rano, Kibiya, Bunkure, Gabasawa, Dawakin Tofa, Kano
Municipal, Dambatta, Takai, Dawakin Kudu, Karaye, Rogo, Kura, Wudil,
Bichi, Sumaila, Garun Malam, Ungogo, Bebeji and Warawa.
However, SERA Executive Secretary in an interview on Wednesday, said:
“Eight local governments in Kano State have so far been affected by
flood disaster in 2016. They are Bagwai, Shanono, Kiru, Bebeji, Dawakin
Kudu, Garun Malam, Warawa, and Wudil
“In Bagwai, we recorded 220 victims, Shanono has 58 victims, Garun
Malam has 197 victims, Kiru has 775, Bebeji 403 victims, Warawa has 84
victims, Dawakin Kudu has 2,067. On the whole, we have about 5,300
victims of flood in Kano,” he said.
