Less than two weeks to the day President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia was scheduled to hand over to President-elect Adama Barrrow, West African leaders will meet in Abuja for a meeting to ensure peaceful transition. Mr. Jammeh, who initially conceded defeat, has vowed to remain in office and has ignored calls by West African ECOWAS leaders, the UN, EU and the U.S. to quit.

The Gambian leader, who has been in office for 22 years, accused ECOWAS of declaring war on his government by stating that all options including military action was on the table to ensure his ouster.
However, in furtherance of his mandate as mediator, the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, will host four other West African leaders to a meeting aimed at avoiding violence and preserving democracy in Gambia.

President Buhari, and the immediate past President of Ghana, John Mahama as Mediator and Co-Mediator respectively, have also been mandated by ECOWAS to ensure the safety Mr. Barrow and ensure a peaceful handover of power on January 19.

The meeting in Abuja is following the one in Accra on the sidelines of the inauguration of that country’s President which expressed the readiness of the leaders of the sub-region to continue the pursuit of dialogue with the leaders of The Gambia.

The Presidents of Liberia and Senegal, the Vice President of Sierra-Leone and ex-President Mahama are expected at the meeting.

The war against corruption may gather more steam soon, going by President Muhammadu Buhari’s latest pronouncement. The President has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-graft agencies to probe even his own children or members of his family implicated in corrupt practices.

He said he would not forgive the anti-graft agency if it fails to pobe any allegation of corruption against his children and family members.

A sketch of Buhari’s tough anti-corruption mindset and plans was contained in a book, “Muhammadu Buhari: The challenges of leadership in Nigeria”, which is authored by Prof. John Paden.

The book reveals how Buhari inspired the acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu as a school boy to develop anti-graft traits.

It adds: “Buhari’s attitude is to let the chips fall where they may in particular cases, although reform of the judiciary is one of his larger goals. “Buhari has often said that if any of his own children were accused of corruption, and the authorities did not investigate, he would never forgive the authorities.”

It was also learnt that the President has rebuffed pressure to save his allies in the All Progressives Congress(APC) from being probed by anti-graft agencies.

In spite of their close family ties, it was learnt that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to save the former National Security Adviser, Mr. Sambo Dasuki because his policy is that there should be no sacred cows in the anti-corruption war.

It was also revealed for the first time that Buhari does not have any grudge against Dasuki despite the latter’s involvement in the August 1985 coup, which led to the former’s removal as a military head of state.

“On numerous occasions, Buhari has urged public officials to do their duty without fear or favour. He has also tried to inspire younger generations to regard public service as an honest calling.

“For example, the current acting head of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu was a schoolboy in Borno when Buhari was military governor in 1975. Buhari gave a talk to a group of boys that included Magu and urged them to do their best. “Magu was inspired and became a professional policeman.

“In 2015, Buhari asked Magu to head the EFCC, a dangerous job if done well. By mid-May 2016, Magu had secured 143 convictions of corrupt officials.”

Unknown to many, the book has revealed how Buhari resisted pressure to save his allies in APC from being arrested or prosecuted for corruption.

It also unfolded Buhari’s vision for a set of specialized anti-corruption tribunals to fast-track the war against corruption.

The book adds: “The EFCC has been functioning since the administration of President Obasanjo, when it was under the direction of Nuhu Ribadu, a policeman and lawyer who initially was effective before political pressures began to intrude.

“Under President Jonathan, the EFCC was directed by Ibrahim Lamorde and seemed, from the outside, to be functioning well. Inside, however, rumours of corruption among EFCC officials abounded.

“Under President Buhari, the acting chair of EFCC has been Ibrahim Magu, who seems to have taken his lead from Buhari’s determined fight against corruption. “The widespread investigations conducted by the EFCC and the number of referrals to prosecutors have been unprecedented in EFCC’s history.

“In addition, Buhari discussed his anti-corruption efforts with the Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Mohammed Mahmud, who agreed to establish a set of specialised anti-corruption tribunals. “These tribunals would cover both military and civilian cases. Creating such tribunals, however, requires special authorization from the National Assembly, which has been slow in coming.

“Although a number of senior officials have been tried for corruption prior to the Buhari presidency, the extent of current corruption court cases in Nigeria is unprecedented. “That does not mean that every case will lead to a guilty verdict.

“All of the accused are entitled to their day in court, and are likely to have high-quality legal representation; and there will surely be appeals and possible plea bargains. “Cases may drag on for years. But the fact remains: the law is takings its course.

“Importantly, in none of these cases (apart from certain military procurement scandals that impacted National Assembly) has the prosecution been sponsored or encouraged by President Buhari. “He has kept his hands off the judiciary, despite enormous pressure for him to come to the aid of APC allies.

“The question will arise when criminal cases are concluded as to whether the Nigerian judiciary is up to the task of being even-handed in such high-level cases.”

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja commended the Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of social networking website, Facebook, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg for sharing his wealth of knowledge with Nigerian youths, and inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs.

Receiving the internet entrepreneur in the State House, President Buhari said the various meetings held with Nigerian youths since his arrival were most timely as the country was already exploring opportunities to spur development through entrepreneurship.

``Nigeria has always been identified as a country with great potentials for growth, especially with our youthful population, but now we are moving beyond the potentials to reality.

``I am impressed by your simplicity in sharing your knowledge and wealth with those with less income,’’ the President said.

President Buhari noted that the simplicity and magnanimity of the entrepreneur, who is among the world’s richest men, had also challenged the culture of lavish wealth display and impulsive spending that had become peculiar to Nigerians.

``In our culture, we are not used to seeing successful people appear like you. We are not used to seeing successful people jogging and sweating on the streets. ``We are more used to seeing successful people in air-conditioned places. We are happy you are well-off and simple enough to always share,’’ he added.

In his remarks, Zuckerberg said he was impressed by the interest, energy and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by young Nigerians in all the ICT camps that he had visited.

``I was highly impressed by the talent of the youths in the Co-creation Hub in Yaba. I was blown away by their talent and the level of energy that I saw,’’ he said.

Zuckerberg said he was in the country to promote the penetration of “fast and cheap” internet connectivity, Express-wifi, that would help people create online businesses and reduce poverty.

John Oyegun with Buhari
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has admitted that President Muhammadu Buhari is no longer popular like he was during the 2015 general election. “All governments worldwide in between terms lose some degree of popularity; no question about that,” he told Punch.
“We are having harsh economic times, no question about that and that does not increase the popularity of any government. It only diminishes it to some extent. What is different is that, in our case, in spite of the harsh economic realities, the people still have full confidence, trust.
“I think that is the proper word, in President Buhari, that he will do his very best to improve their lot and I think the proof of that was the reaction to the threatened strikes by the labour unions. You can see that even though people are unhappy, they refused to come out because they understood.
“They are in pain but they understood why the pain was there and they trusted the President that he was doing everything within his power to ameliorate their pain. So yes, there is a lot of grumbling all over the place, but also there is a lot of trust in Mr. President”, he added.
On internal crisis in some states, including Kano, Bayelsa and Kogi, Oyegun said APC was attending to each of them.
“In vevery case, we are making progress. Bayelsa should be concluded in a matter of weeks. Kano is basically a personality thing and we’ve got everybody to sheathe their swords for now.
“And I think that has happened. Kano has cooled off. We also have issues in Kogi State which we are also attending to. That is the only way you know a government that is in power.
“If we were in opposition, there won’t be skirmishes in these states because there would be nothing to skirmish over but since we are in power, people are still struggling for relative importance within the system with an eye on tomorrow.
“These things are normal, they are expected but we’ve developed that habit of democratic consultation and reconciliation and it is working”, he added.

The Nigerian Army has denied teaming up with any group to overthrow the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Army was reacting to the recent claim by a group, under the aegis of Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force (JNDLF) that some officers of the Nigerian Army approached them for support to kick Buhari out of power.
Recall that Presdient Buhari was ousted from power through a palace coup in 1985.

The army, while describing the group as faceless, called on the general public to disregard the claim in its entirety.
A statement by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations said the military was working closely with the current government in its fight against terrorism in the country.
The statement reads in full:
“The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to another campaign of calumny and distraction by faceless criminal gang of economic saboteurs that hide under the aegis of Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force (JNDLF) alleging that some officers of the Nigerian Army approached them for support to overthrow our duly elected present democratic government.

This is baseless and most unfortunate allegation that existed in the warped minds of the originators of such weighty allegation. The Nigerian Army wish to state that this is not true and hereby distanced itself from this weighty allegation.
We also see this speculation as a dangerous distraction to our effort in fighting insurgency and other criminal elements in the country.
The Nigerian Army would like to send a strong and an unequivocal warning to those speculating a coup by the Nigerian Army (NA) against the Government to desist forthwith. We would like state in clear terms that that we are a product of democracy and a focused professional institution and would have nothing to do with such abomination and heinous crime.
We wish to state further that the NA is the greatest beneficiary of democracy and therefore cannot ever contemplate any anti-democratic misadventure, certainly not under the command of the present Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai.
Rather, we see this type of dangerous speculation as a declaration of war to destabilise the present government by these unscrupulous elements.
The Nigerian Army is investigating those behind the dangerous insinuation in order to unravel the real motive behind it.
We would like to reiterate our unalloyed loyalty to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and defence of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We would also like to reaffirm our unconditional support and obedience to civil authority.
We wish to further assure Nigerians and indeed all peace loving people that the Nigerian Army and indeed its personnel will never be involved in such terrible misadventure.
We wish to further add that no matter how long it takes, we would track and find out those behind these insinuations and bring them to justice.‎”

President Muhammdu Buhari on Wednesday met with staff of the State House, Abuja.
It was his first close meeting with them since he assumed office a year ago.
President Buhari, who addressed the staff in the court of the State House, read out the riot act to them.
While seeking the cooperation of the staff, the president warned that anyone who tried to use their closeness to the seat of power to defraud the country, will end up like the others currently being prosecuted.
Those who behave themselves would never be embarrassed…if you behave yourself you will sleep soundly”, he told them.

The inability of over two-thirds of state governments across the country to pay workers’ salaries, has been described as a national disgrace by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The president stated this yesterday when he had an interactive session with State House workers, who gathered at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa to welcome him back from his 10-day vacation in London.
He said: “27 out of the 36 states cannot pay salaries. This is a disgrace to Nigeria. It is a disgrace up till now that most of the states cannot pay salaries. What happened to all we have gotten over the years? We look up and down, left, right and centre, what have we saved? There was nothing because we developed a consumption culture that we were not supposed to develop. Most of your colleagues that have left service, I doubt if they are getting benefits. That is the situation we find ourselves in”.
Noting that the military had made remarkable improvement against insurgency in the northeast, the president decried the spate of bombings of oil installations in the Niger Delta by militants.
He said: “Unfortunately, the other unstable part of the country, the Niger Delta, with their myriads of organizations that are competing over which one can do more damage to the country and the oil companies and oil wells. For how long are we going to do this?”
In a direct warning to those still carrying out underhand dealings in the government, President Buhari advised them to desist because anyone caught in the act will have themselves to blame.
“All fraud must stop!” he said. “If they don’t believe us, they should go try and see those we caught red-handed with public funds. This will continue as long as this leadership is here.
“Whoever takes anything that does not belong to him or that he is not entitled to, it will be documented and the person will be taken to court. This is the only way I think we can bail ourselves out.
“I am asking you to dedicate yourselves more to your country because I said more than 30 years ago, that there is no other country we can call our home, but Nigeria”, he said
“We are determined to rehabilitate our country for the sake of our children and our grandchildren. I have never in my life from class monitor to this place, twice in different forms, believed in corruption.
“But we won’t touch anybody who did not touch public funds, you should behave yourself. If you don’t have houses in Abuja and the whole of Europe, you will sleep soundly. You and your family will earn respect. But if you shortchange the treasury, you will be caught and I pity your family because people will be abusing them.
“People will be calling you big thieves that how did you raise money to build all the houses in Abuja and Europe with your meagre salary. I think personal integrity is something to be encouraged. I assure you that I am absolutely dedicated to serving Nigeria. Those who behave themselves will never regret”, he added.
On his vacation, he said: “I thank you for welcoming me back from my health break. You are the judges, perhaps I look healthier than I left or I came back worse”.
Responding on behalf of the worker, Permanent Secretary (State House), Jalal Arabi: said: “We are here to welcome you back from your well-deserved vacation”.
Arabi prayed for good health, God’s guidance and wisdom for the president to continue to lead the nation.

A Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Sen Isah Hamma Misau on the floor of the senate today alleged that outgoing Inspector General of Police was corrupt because he promoted many junior officers above the ranks due to them.
Supporting the motion raised by Senator Dino Melaye that the Standing Rules of the senate  is authentic and it’s not forged  said that the suit filed against principal officers of the Nigerian senate was  a calculated attempt by the Attorney General who may likely be sponsored by a group somewhere.

Misau, also Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy alleged that the outgoing IG was no saint as he aided in promoting officers unduly.
Meanwhile, the senate has ordered that the AGF be brought to the floor of the senate to answer questions as regards his suit against Senate President Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu

Aisha-Buhari

The Presidency has described Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State attempt to link President Buhari’s wife, Aisha, to US Congressman William Jefferson’s bribery scandal for which the American lawmaker was convicted in 2009 as laughable.
According to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the presidency would have ordinarily  ignored Fayose because he was a man “childishly obsessed with the desire to grab the headlines and insulting people at will because of his incurably boorish instincts,” but chose to because of innocent Nigerians who might be misled by Mr. Fayose’s shameless and blatant distortion of facts.
In a press statement signed by Mr Shehu, Aisha had no direct, indirect or the remotest connection with William Jefferson’s corruption scandal in the United States. He further dared Mr. Fayose to tell Nigerians if the so-called Aisha whose pictures he proudly, but ignorantly shared, was the same Aisha married to President Muhammadu Buhari, or if the Aisha of his idle imagination had any relationship by blood or any relationship in whatever form with President Buhari’s wife.
Mr Shehu added that though Fayose was entittled to free speech that does not include the right to falsely accuse innocent people of crimes they knew nothing about.
Aisha Buhari, according to the media aide was entitled to protect her reputation from being recklessly maligned, adding that political opposition was not a licence to attack people’s reputation brazenly without legal consequences.
