ASUU Strike: Lecturers meet Nigerian govt delegation

The various local branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Wednesday held meetings to vote on whether or not to accept the federal government’s new offer, PREMIUM TIMES can report.
This came on the heels of an earlier report by PREMIUM TIMES where the ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, explained that the body’s National Executive Council, NEC, was yet to meet to review the government’s offer.
The NEC meeting is expected to meet after each local branch of the union submit its stance on the ongoing strike by the lecturers.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the meeting is meant to arrive at two possible outcomes, to either vote for the suspension of the strike or its continuation.
Sources within ASUU told PREMIUM TIMES that lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba voted to end the strike action., while those of Usman Dan Fodiyo University also voted to end the strike. The lecturers at the University of Lagos reportedly voted for the continuation of the strike action as at the time of filing this report.
The officials at the universities declined comment when contacted. The UNILAG-ASUU chairman, Adelaja Odukoya, confirmed that branches held their meetings on Monday; but declined to divulge the outcome of his branch’s congress.
“It is true. We held congress today although the decision we reached today is a private one,” he said.
ASUU has been on strike since August 13 to protest the poor welfare of members and the underfunding of universities.
The ASUU NEC meeting is expected to be a follow-up to the branches’ meetings after consultations. It is expected that there would be a collation of all branches ‘positions’ with a simple majority taken to decide whether or not the strike will be called off.
Despite the assurances by the Minister of Education, Adamu, on August 17 that the strike would be called off within one week, the strike has now continued for about a month.

The Registrar of the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede has disclosed that the 2017 UTME registration will commence within the next two weeks.

He further mentioned that the examination itself will be coming up later in May so it won't clash with any SSCE examinations, and help the board check any form of malpractice, especially upgrading of results.

“Normally, we conduct our examinations around March and the results will be ready within two to three days. But when do we need the results? It is always between July and August. This gives room for all forms of suspicion.

“If you go on the net, you will see people claiming that they could help candidates to upgrade their results because the results are lying fallow between March and July”

“Now we want to shorten the period in such a way that the time between the examination and when the results will be used will be very short. There will be no opportunity for anybody to even dream of upgrading results." He stated

He equally stated that the 1.7m candidates figure was last year’s figure and bit the board do not expect less this year. "We expect about 1.5 million candidates for UTME and about 200,000 and 300,000 candidates for Direct Entry. That was how we arrived at the figure and that is the figure we are also expecting."

He further emphasized that the board is not promising a hitch free examination but promised that issues arising will be solved.

The Federal Government has directed some of universities to stop running programmes that are outside their mandates.

Gaining admission is the core desire of some Nigerian youths; they are blinded by the persistent need to join their peers in the university. They do not pay attention to the courses being run by the schools in as much as they get admitted.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has looked into the academic sector by forbidding some varsities to stop offering major courses they are not at liberty to run while they warned some of them to stop changing the nomenclature of some courses.

In truth, some courses have been twisted to suit the need of the school and the administrators. Courses like banking engineering have been introduced into the portal of some Nigerian universities.

Schools now offer courses that are not within their mandates. Most of the varsities affected are specialised schools that offer law and accounting. These are major courses that should not be listed in the portal of schools that seek to fulfill the need of manpower in certain sectors of the economy.

Check out the specialized universities that the FG has forbidden to offer courses like law and accounting:

Universities of Agriculture

1. Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB)

2. Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM)

3. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU)

Universities of Technology

1. Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)

2. Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO)

3. Madibbo Adama University of Technology Yola (MAUTECH)

4. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso (LAUTECH)

5. Abubakar Tafawa University of Technology Bauchi (ATBU)

6. Bells University of Technology Ota (BUT)

7. Rivers State University of Science and Technology Portharcourt (RSUST)

8. Enugu State University of Science and Technology Enugu (ESUT)

9. Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil (KUST)

10. Cross River State University of Tecnology Calabar (CRUTECH)

It is expected that these schools will remove law and accounting from their portals. Universities of medicine was also listed as part of those schools meddling their curriculum with courses they are not at liberty to offer.

These universities derailed from their statutory responsibility by running programmes that contradicts their mandates. Universities of Agriculture now offer courses like business administration, accounting, banking and finance, management courses and so on.

Some Nigerian universities offer banking engineering and accounting technology. It is hoped that the concerned schools will take immediate steps to stop such programmes. Candidates should also avoid choosing courses like that as they are illegal and not provided in the JAMB brochure.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged the public to disregard the speculations that it had commenced the sales of its application documents for 2017 UTME by some group of persons. The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, debunked the speculations in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

According to the statement, the Registrar of the examination body, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has expressed disappointment with the development and calls on innocent Nigerians not to fall prey. “The public is hereby notified that JAMB has not commenced the sales of its application documents as advertised by some unknown and desperate persons. FILE: CANDIDATES WRITING UTME IN ABUJAFILE: CANDIDATES WRITING UTME IN ABUJA “They are to disregard any website or individuals claiming to be in possession of these documents and offering same for sales. “We are putting finishing touches to innovation and changes to ease the challenges associated with the procedure of application for the 2017 all Computer-Based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). “We are looking forward to announcing the commencement of the sales of these documents very soon,’’ the statement quoted the registrar as saying. The statement advised the public to feel free to contact the board for clarification on its activities through its website or contact numbers whenever they were in doubt. It noted that Oleyede had announced his willingness to open the board’s door to the public to make valuable contributions and also report any act against the board’s pedigree by either the staff or the board’s development partners. “We must all be interested in what happens in JAMB, as it is too important to be ignored. “Help us to watch over where our eyes cannot get to, hear where our ears fail and be our police where our presence is insufficient,’’ the statement said. It added that the Registrar had restated the board’s determination to ensure that nobody was spared in sustaining and advancing the credibility of the board. Meanwhile, the board has hailed the judgment of the National Industrial Court sustaining the sack of one of its former staff, one Cletus Uloko in 2015. According to the statement, Uloko’s services were terminated following acts of misconduct contrary to civil service rule. It said Uloko was sacked because he was wrongfully in procession of over 120 e-slip of candidates without authorisation and justification. The statement explained that upon the development, Uloko was queried and on responding, his explanation was not satisfactory to the board. It further said that the board then constituted a disciplinary committee which recommended that Uloko ran foul and breached all the extant civil service laws and therefore sacked him. According to the statement, based on the termination of the appointment Uloko approached the National Industrialist Court to seek for redress, compensation and reinstatement. The statement explained that in a notification of termination of suit made available by the JAMB legal team to the board said: “We, by this letter, hereby notify the board that final judgment had been delivered on the matter on Sept. 27’’. It said the letter further said that the court dismissed the claimant’s suit. (NAN)
