The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has announced plans by Nigerian government to recruit 7,500 graduates as Community Tax Liaison Officers to raise tax awareness among citizens thereby increasing the number of tax payers.

Adeosun, along with the Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr BabaTunde Fowler made this known at a joint media briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

This move according to Adeosun has become necessary owning to the very low number of persons captured in Nigeria’s Tax Database.

FIRS on August 29th commences recuirtment of Tax Liaison Officers .
She said that through this initiative, the government expected to increase the number of taxpayers by 35 percent from 14 million to about 17 million in two years.

“We will be recruiting them through N-Power and they can apply through the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance or through the N-Power website.

“It’s a two-year fixed contract and they will be deployed to states, attached to state Internal Revenue Service or FIRS.

“Their job is to improve the level of education on the Nigeria’s tax system.

“Our tax system is progressive, meaning those who earn less should pay less and those who earn more should pay more.

“A lot of people don’t know that. So it’s a chance to get people on ground to answer all these pertinent questions,” she said.

Adeosun said that graduates of accounting, economics, mathematics and other relevant courses would be given priority under the programme.

She, however, encouraged intelligent graduates interested in a career in tax administration to apply as the government planned to sponsor the recruits to become tax professionals.

“This exercise is extremely important for the fiscal sustainability of states because as you know, most of the revenue for states apart from FAAC is supposed to come from tax.

“So if we improved the number of taxpayers, we will be improving the fiscal health of our state governments as well as the Federal Government.

“It’s an important initiative for the nation as we undertake reforms to reduce our over-dependence on oil.

“We have to make sure that everyone who is economically active pays tax, no matter how little, they have to contribute to the pool,” she said.

The total offering to Uber Lagos entrepreneurs includes finance at a fixed interest rate of 5% per annum, with a loan period of 36 months

Uber is changing the way Lagos driver-partners access finance and grow their small businesses. The global ride-sharing platform has partnered with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund who will provide access to finance for budding transport entrepreneurs at just 5% per annum. This is 15% lower than any other financial institution. Access to affordable finance is critical to the success of any entrepreneur, as it frees up the cash flow for them to focus on growing their business. The introduction of finance at a lower interest rate for driver-partners will help them thrive as they run their business on the Uber platform.

Uber has particular relevance in a city such as Lagos, where traffic congestion is an ongoing challenge. Nigeria is a booming African economy. With rapid urbanisation comes more people using the country’s roads. Lagos is an economic hub, which makes this challenge increasingly acute for those using the city’s roads. If more people take advantage of ride-sharing services like Uber, there will be less cars on the road and less overall congestion. For this reason, the platform has been welcomed and supported by the Lagos State.

Ebi Atawodi, General Manager for Uber in West Africa says, “We are encouraged by the Lagos State’s commitment to ridesharing platforms like Uber. Their support of local entrepreneurs not only fosters the growth of sustainable businesses, but strengthens a highly-viable transport industry in Lagos.”

Uber driver-partners in Lagos will also find it easier to buy their own vehicle. Driver-partners can now buy new cars that are locally-assembled in Nigeria by Stallion Motors (Hyundai i10 and Hyundai Grand Xcent). The partnership between Uber and LSETF has made this process simple. If they qualify for the financing provided by LSETF, Uber entrepreneurs can buy any new locally-assembled car up to a value of N3 million and only need to contribute 5% of the vehicle purchase price when they buy the car.

Lagos is an economic hub, which makes this challenge increasingly acute for those using the city’s roads

According to Akintunde Oyebode, the Executive Secretary of LSETF, partnerships like this provide a platform for sustainable job and wealth creation, and demonstrate a seamless collaboration between private capital and Government. “The partnership with Uber is proof of Lagos State Government's willingness to support innovative solutions that solve social problems, in this case, transport, and also provide jobs to its residents.”

The option to purchase locally made vehicles gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to obtain the assets required to grow their business and contributes to the growth of the local economy. Local automotive production is a priority across the country, which has been emphasised in the Nigeria Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP). Nigeria is a promising automotive hub, given its large economy, growing urban population and a targeted drive by government to grow the industry.

Ridesharing trends and a refined automotive industry go hand in hand. Dr. Andrew S. Nevin, Advisory Partner and Chief Economist, PwC Nigeria says, “Already Uber driver-partners have made over a million trips in Nigeria in the last two years. This trend could fast-track Nigeria’s path to becoming an automotive hub potentially boosting sales of new and used vehicles as individuals take advantage of partnering with these companies to gain extra income.” These new cars on the road are likely to replace thousands of personal cars in Lagos, as more people use Uber to move across the city. Over time as people get used to the idea that you can always push a button and get a ride -- the need to own a car, or buy a second family car, goes down.

The total offering to Uber Lagos entrepreneurs includes finance at a fixed interest rate of 5% per annum, with a loan period of 36 months. Lagos driver-partners will be afforded the opportunity to purchase a vehicle to the value of up to N3 million, with a 5% deposit required. Stallion motors are offering both the Hyundai Grand Xcent (N3m) and Hyundai i10 (N2.7m) for this deal - both cars are locally assembled and are in line with the NAIDP.

In order to qualify Lagos entrepreneurs will be required to have been operating on the Uber platform and their Uber rating should be 4.5 or higher.

The Uber and LSETF partnership begins in December with the hopes of expanding it to more Uber partners in the near future.

Abuja – The Federal Government has directed the immediate release of N65 billion for the take- off of its National Social Investment Programme.

Minister of State for Budget and National Planning Zainab Ahmed announced this while addressing State House correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

She stated that the N65 billion was part of the N150 billion approved by the steering committee of the programme.

The N500 billion is earmarked by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in the 2016 appropriation bill for the implementation of the social investment programme.

The minister, however, announced that already N25 billion of the N65 billion had been released into the account of the programme while the remaining N40 billon would soon be credited into the account.

“On the social investment Programme, what we are doing today is to tell Nigerians that the programme is starting.

“We have approval from the steering committee in sum of N150 billion.

“So far N25 billion has been released into the account and there is another N40 billion that is in the process of being released into the account.

“Remember we said implementation would be done in stages as the states are ready for each of the programme they are added into each of the scheme.

“The School Feeding Programme has started in some states like Kaduna, Osun; the Federal Government is only adding its resources to it.

“The Federal Government will handle from primary 1 to 3 while the states will handle from 4 to 6.

“The ministry presented a memo to council for notation and implementation on the progress of national roll out of the social investment programme.

The minister said the programme was in four parts.

According to her, the first is the homegrown school feeding Programme which is targeting 5.5 million primary school people in all the states of the federation from primary 1-3.

She disclosed that 11 states were set to fully start the scheme which would involve feeding 3.5 million school children.

The second is a job creation programme aimed at training 500,000 university graduates, who would be deployed to work in their local communities as teachers, agriculture workers and health support workers.

Ahmed said the graduands would be receiving a monthly stipend of N30,000 monthly for a period of two years.

The minister said the third scheme was the Conditional Cash Transfer ( CCT), where one million care givers would be given N5,000 monthly for a period of two years.

“Focus has been given to the extremely poor and vulnerable in our society and special emphasis is being placed to providing as many as possible in the North Eastern part of the country where a lot of Internally Displaced Persons.’’

According to the minister, the fourth is the Enterprise Promotion Programme, which is essentially the loan scheme which will be handled by the Bank of Industry.

She said that 1.66 million people, made up of market women, traders, artisans, small businesses, youths would be given loan from N10,000 to N100,000.

She said the repayment period of the loans would be three to six months with administration cost of five per cent.

On the request for National Asssembly’s approval to obtain 29 billion dollars loans by the government, the minister said the amount would be used to fund the 2016 budget deficit.

“On the borrowing plan that President has sent to the National Assembly for 2016, indeed included in the borrowing plan is the amount that is required for both local and foreign borrowing to fund the 2016 budget deficit.

“The budget implementation itself is on course; the 2016 budget is fully performed to date in terms of personnel, that is to say we are not owing any salaries at the federal level.

“Operational expenditure has been disbursed for eight months and the ninth month is just being processed.

“Capital expenditure has disbursed to the tune of nearly 50 per cent.

The #Immigration2000 who started their protest on Friday and also slept at the street of Abuja very close to the Aso Rock main gate continue with the protest this morning.

Saturday, 20 August 2016

The nigeriaimmigration2000 youth protesters spent the night in front of aso villa as they are still yet unattended to. Is this the change we voted for? Why is Mr president insensitive to the plights of these youths. Is it because they are children of the poor? If it was Zara Buhari will the president leave her to spent the night outside? What is the crime of these youths for seeking for what rightfully belongs to them? It's time for the nigerian youths to stand firm against this injustice meted on these youths. It might be them today, think of yourself tomorrow.
