Real Madrid fans turned the Santiago Bernabeu gold before Saturday's LaLiga match against Granada as Cristiano Ronaldo was honoured for his fourth Ballon d'Or triumph. Ronaldo scooped the most coveted individual gong in world football last month on the back of Madrid's march to Champions League glory and Portugal's Euro 2016 triumph.

Supporters held up sheets of gold paper as the teams entered the field on Saturday, with Ronaldo's four Ballon d'Or trophies laid out on a table.
Ronaldo took his place beside them for a short ceremony, where he was greeted by previous winners and ex-Madrid stars Raymond Kopa, Michael Owen, Luis Figo and former Brazil striker Ronaldo.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was also among their number – the French World Cup winner claimed the Ballon d'Or in 1998 – and Kaka and Fabio Cannavaro sent their congratulations via video messages on the stadium screens.

A smiling Ronaldo then posed for photographs before Madrid kicked off in a bid to extend their club-record unbeaten run to 39 matches, a feat that would pull them level with Barcelona's all-time best mark for a Spanish side.

Three big-name footballers are on the brink of revealing that they’re gay. That’s according to SNP MP John Nicolson, who is a member of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee. He claims the trio are in talks with the FA to come out publicly, thus becoming the first current players to do so.

File Photo

He said: “I understand there are three players in talks with the FA about coming out, and they haven’t done so yet.”

The revelation came as MPs grilled Sports Minister Tracey Crouch about the support that was available for homosexual stars.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Tracey Crouch has taken aim at FA chairman Greg Clarke after he said that he “wouldn’t recommend” any players to come out in the current climate.

Attention President Muhammadu Buhari: This is what the man you appointed the general overseer of our sports told an international media organisation,Voice of America, Hausa Service: Nigeria does not need to attend the next World Cup holding in Russia.

The World Cup is not just a football competition. It also represents a bigger avenue for nations to showcase their football artistry to a global audience, with players getting to secure new and bumper contracts and endorsements, which in turn, impact positively on the country’’s Gross Domestic Product and Foreign Direct Investment. Football is business and the World Cup fetches money for all participants. It is top in entertainment and business. Qualifiers even earn more than $5m from Fifa.

Besides the Olympics, the World Cup is by far the single biggest sports competition in the world, drawing record crowd appearances and creating a never-seen like before football atmospheres for its one-month duration.
The road to the next World Cup in 2018 is on, with the Super Eagles are leading the proverbial group of death with six maximum points from two matches against Zambia and Algeria. Cameroon, the only African country with the most appearance at the World Cup make up the group, from which only the first-placed team qualifies for the event.

Having missed out on a place at the next Africa Cup of Nations, starting in January in Gabon, Nigeria desperately needs to play at the World Cup to make up for the lost chance to play at AFCON 2017 but bizarrely, the one who ought to be championing the cause of going to the World Cup is ridiculously the one kicking against it.

Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung yesterday stunned all when he told the Voice of America that he was against Nigeria’s participation at the World Cup.

His reasons: “That competition stinks of corruption; that Nigeria is too poor to waste money on it and that Nigeria would never win the trophy”. The implication of his statement is also that it is not necessary to waste money qualifying when you cannot win the World Cup.
As shocking as these may be, Dalung, a lawyer by training, said Nigeria should be content with playing at the Nations Cup, Olympics, Commonwealth Games. He said that Nigeria could win the Nations Cup but not the World Cup. World Cup finalists are guaranteed huge sum of money running into millions.

According to Dalung, “The cup that we can win is the African Cup of Nations. There is nothing again that will take us to another man’s balcony in the name of the World Cup. We already have the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. For these, we can attend such meets. But I am opposed to the World Cup. We don’t agree to it. Conspiracy in the World Cup is too much,” he said, a statement that could upset the world governing body, FIFA. He was not done.

“There is the issue of bribery and favouritism. There is also the issue of corruption before you are even given the hosting rights. We are here suffering from hunger and we don’t have money for such things. That is why, even if we try many times, once it gets into the politics of the game, we can never win.

“That was why this year, we had to tackle him (FIFA President, Ginani Infantino) and we said, ‘you , Infantino, if you win this election, you have to give us a position. If not, we shall not agree.’ And you see , by the grace of God, he even picked an African as his Secretary-General. That means he has started taking honey and rubbing on our lips. That means that one day, we shall get to really lick the honey.”

This is ridiculous and unbelievable. But they are the exact words of Sports Minister Dalung, a man, who has allegedly fanned the embers of discord, disunity and crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation.

It is recalled that Dalung was the unseen hand in the crisis of leadership, that rocked the NFF after Chris Giwa threatened to seize power from the Amaju Pinnick-led Executive Board.

Despite CAS and FIFA’s unambiguous backing of Pinnick’s board, Dalung called for a meeting between Pinnick and Giwa in his Abuja office, which snowballed into an all-out fight between both gladiators. As if that was not enough, the Minister has continuously asked the Amaju led board to co-opt Chris Giwa and his members into their board, ignoring the fact that membership of the board is through election. It has been from one dispute to another and Nigerian football has been in court.

Truly, football disputes are out of the jurisdiction of the ordinary law court as the Courts of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland sits over all disputes in sports.
The minister’s latest comments confirm him as a total stranger to sports who has bluntly refused to learn the ropes.

Barcelona star Gerard Pique has revealed the lame chat-up line which he used in winning Shakira over -as he gave hope to single men around the world...The Barcelona and Spain star has been with the Colombian pop princess for six years after they met ahead of the World Cup in 2010.

The pair who have two children together -met during the filming of her video for her song Waka Waka. Pique revealed they first started talking about the weather when they met
The Spanish defender told an interview in Spain:
"She arrived in South Africa before us because she was singing at the opening ceremony. I sent her a text asking how the weather was because we were arriving in a few days."
Not exactly thrilling, is it? But it worked. He continues;
"This is a typical stupid question that you write and normally get a response like, ‘it’s cold, bring a coat’. "But the she writes a long paragraph, detailing the change in temperature throughout the day. "I thought, ‘Jesus, this is not normal’. It was in those details that I could tell there was affection."
And it turned out that Shakira proved to be Pique's inspiration behind Spain's World Cup victory. He continues:
"We started messaging each other throughout the tournament, but the only chance I would have of seeing her would be at the final because she was performing the closing ceremony. "I told her that if I had to reach the final to see her I would do so. And that was the second time we met, after the World Cup Final."

The children of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique took the first steps in their own football careers with FC Barcelona's football school this week. Thiago Messi and Milan Pique, who are both three years old, joined Benjamin Suarez, who turns three next week, attended their first day at the FCB Escola on Monday.

All employees have the option of sending their kids to Barca's football pre-school, with twice-weekly classes serving as an introduction to the sport every Monday and Wednesday.

Barca’s famed ‘DNA’ has been best shown in recent years by the likes of first-team stars Messi and Pique with their all-conquering Nou Camp crop.

And the club are determined to make sure that continues with the next generation, whether that be with the sons of their famous current stars, or bringing new starlets through La Masia.

Barcelona’s blonde bombshell Lionel Messi has revealed the reason behind his drastic change of hairstyle over the summer. The Argentina captain caused ripples throughout the world of football when he appeared with a platinum blonde do while on holiday with his family.

And when quizzed about the dye-job, he affirmed that it was part of a time of soul-searching following his nation’s Copa America failure.

“One particularly tough day I dyed my hair, I had to start again from scratch. I said to myself, ‘I have to make a clean break and start over”, he explained during an interview with cult Argentine comedy figure ‘Mingo’ on Telefe’s ‘Polemica en el bar’.

The star donned ‘Mingo’s’ iconic hat and checked scarf during the chat, while he also saw the actor save one of his penalties.

Messi also admitted that his young son Thiago might not be following in his footsteps, as he shows little interest in the beautiful game.

“I try not to give Thiago balls as presents, he doesn’t like football much,” he said.

“We’ll see if he gets into it now as he’s started playing in a club.”

Despite the no love lost relationship between Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung and bronze-wining U-23 Olympic football coach, Samson Siasia, the coach has said that he was yet to come to terms with the tantrums of the Minister before the Games that just ended in Rio. “The whole thing surprised me”, Siasia said in Johannesburg while on a stopover to connect the final leg of the flight from São Paulo to Johannesburg and to Lagos. Siasia drew the ire of the Minister when he complained about the hardship his team faced while preparing for the Olympics. The Minister denied knowledge of the team’s whereabouts but also ridiculed the coaches that they could be engaged in human trafficking. The drama did not stop there as it snowballed into an international embarrassment as the team could not be airlifted to Rio until a few hours to its opening game against Japan. “As we speak, I don’t know what I have done to offend the Minister. The whole thing is surprising”, Sia One, as he is fondly called said. The coach however added that it was funny that when he met the Minister one on one after a string of good results, the man did not recognize him. “It’s funny. When he came, he shook hands with us and after shaking the players, he asked where is the coach?. Everybody started laughing. We shook hands again and hugged”, Siasia said. He noted that his team could have done better if the environment before the Games was conducive for them. “The environment before the Games was not good but we resolved to weather the storm. The players gave their best. Without necessarily singling out players, Mikel was outstanding. He not only played well, he also motivated the squad with his leadership qualities. Also, Injury did not allow us to use some other good players. Anyway, we’re grateful to win something for Nigerians who showed massive support to us”. With the bronze medal, Nigeria has now won gold, silver and bronze from the Men’s football event of the Olympics. They won gold in 1996 and picked silver eight years ago, also under Samson Siasia. said in Johannesburg while on a stopover to connect the final leg of the flight from São Paulo to Johannesburg and to Lagos. Siasia drew the ire of the Minister when he complained about the hardship his team faced while preparing for the Olympics.

Nigeria was obviously not prepared – Barr. Azuka Okubor The Nigerian government and all the various sports federations were obviously not prepared and need to do better, taking a cue from South Africa and Kenya. Sporting activities and programmes must be well thought out. Let people of proven integrity and passion be at the helm of affairs. We must evaluate results on time scales, for instance, every eight years. Sports ministry need an overhaul – Johnpaul Ejiogu I don’t expect any miracle from them. A wise man once said if you fail to prepare, you’ve automatically prepared to fail. The FG, the sports ministry & the committee responsible for preparing our athletes for this Olympic have failed Nigerians woefully for failing to make all necessary preparations for them on time. The honest truth is, any Olympian that wins any medal in Rio, did that by personal motivation and by the grace of God because we have not prepared for this in any way. When you look at the medal table, you see America, Great Britain, China, South Africa & even Kenya grabbing medals everyday, do you not know they’ve been preparing for this for years? Some started preparing immediately after the last Olympic in London four years ago. That’s how to do well in an outing, not waking up one morning to assemble people for a show of shame. It’s high time the government looked well before dishing out portfolios. Our sports ministry needs an overhaul. To whom less is given, less is expected – Leonard Chukwuma It takes a country to win gold at the Olympics. Owing to the alleged poor treatment the Nigerian Ministry of Sports unleashed on our players, our performance at the Olympics is above average. As the saying goes ‘ To whom less is given, less is expected’ and vice-versa. To the best of my knowledge, the sports ministry have not been this careless before now. Our players lost to the Germans who were a better team. Our players and athletes deserve to be congratulated —Godwin Enyi We must congratulate these guys whether they win or not for putting in great effort despite little or no care for their welfare. It’s only in Nigeria that you hear the Sports ministry asking athletes to foot their expenses to Rio and be reimbursed at a later date. It’s only in Nigeria that athletes are abandoned at the airport hours to their opening game. The national team of this great country resorted to crowd funding to pay for their flight to Rio and the so-called sports minister even had the guts to make outrageous comments, of course nobody sees anything wrong with that. Our athletes deserve some medals —Anabel Going by the efforts our athletes have put in this ongoing Olympics, they are supposed to come back with something tangible, at least a bronze. We read in pages of sports papers how our own Mikel Obi paid hotel bills for dream team in Brazil. So with that kind of commitment and sacrifice I want them to come back with at least a bronze. We failed to plan – Emmanuel Anyebe Countries like the U.S.A,Great Britain,Italy,Canada,Australia,China,Korea etc. have a record of doing very well at the Olympics. This is because they understand that adequate preparation and provision is a good recipe for success. We didn’t prepare well so it will be unfair to set an unrealistic target for them. That would be synonymous to handing a child a tea spoon and expecting him/her to scoop an ocean dry with it. It is totally impossible. Nigeria as a nation did not prepare well enough for this Olympics so how do we expect them to make any meaningful impact at the games? “The earth is on the side of justice”. It will be unfair and unjust to see a nation like ours win other nations who invested good money and time preparing for the Olympics since the last four years. It doesn’t work like that. However, the true spirit of the Olympics is not in the winning of medals irrespective of the colours but in participation. Let’s just participate in Rio and we will stand a better chance of impressing and even stunning the world at the next edition, if we start adequate preparations now not few months to it and then expect miracles to happen. It’s terrible and unfortunate … Onoja Sunday I rate all our country’s Olympic appearance using Atlanta ’96 as the standard. We have really performed below average. This is mainly because our government is neglecting sports which is a binding force in National unity. The government has left sport in the dark as inadequate funding is an issue of concern. We focus more on soccer, boxing and track events. What about other sports like swimming, hockey, podium, cycling, rowing, high jumps and the rest.. It’s terrible and unfortunate that we are still where we are.

FIFA ethics committee investigators have called for a six-year ban against the former head of the South African Football Association Kirsten Nematandani over his alleged role in 2010 match-fixing, a statement said Wednesday. The committee was also seeking lifetime bans over the same offence against a former official from the Zimbabwe Football Association, Jonathan Musavengana, and the ex-coach of Togo’s national team, Banna Tchanile. The possible sanctions follow a probe led by the deputy chief of FIFA’s Independent Ethics Committee, Djimbaraye Bourngar, and are subject to approval by judges at world football’s governing body. Nematandani, the most prominent name in the group, was put on “special leave” in December 2012 following a FIFA report into match-fixing. He was reinstated in January 2013 but not cleared of any wrongdoing and subsequently left the SAFA. A 2012 FIFA investigation looked into South Africa’s friendly matches before the 2010 World Cup against Thailand, Bulgaria, Colombia and Guatemala. It produced a 500-page report that documented the activities of convicted Singapore-based match-fixer Wilson Perumal and his Football 4U organisation. Musavengana was first penalised over alleged match-fixing in 2012 by the Zimbabwean association in a scandal that also involved former national coach Sunday Chidzambwa. Zimbabwean retired high court judge Ahmed Ebrahim conducted an investigation that implicated multiple football power brokers in the country in match-fixing orchestrated by Asian gambling syndicates.
Three Nigerian players have been given the all clear by FIFA ahead of Nigeria’s semi final game against Germany, after it was confirmed that the cautioned they picked up against Denmark has been wiped out. The trio of Muenfuh Sincere, Usman Muhammed and team captain Mikel Obi had their caution wiped out, hence will approach the tie against Germany without any fear of a possible booking that will see them miss the final if they beat the Germans. FIFA amended it’s tournaments rules few years ago, canceling single yellow cards picked up during quarter final games to stem the tide of key players missing final games due to accumulated bookings. Going by the rules, only the deputy captain of the Nigerian team Azubuike Okechukwu is suspended for Wednesday semi final clash against Germany, as the booking he picked up against Denmark was his second of the tournament.

Mourinho-instagram-teaser training
New Manchester United manager, has made his mark at the club’s training ground, just one week into his reign. The Portuguese has been nicknamed ‘Mr Meticulous’, as he begins to implement his methods at the Aon Training Complex.
One of the things Mourinho has done, is to remove the training-pitch cameras installed on the order of former boss, Louis van Gaal. The cameras were used for analysis by the Dutchman and his coaching team, but hated by the players.
Mourinho has also told the players, that he would not be holding evaluation meetings a day after games like Van Gaal.
The Portuguese’s style is usually to form a bond with players, rather than use a teacher/student mode.
“The players have been bowled over by the manager already inside just a few days – the training ground feels alive again and there is a spring in everyone’s step,” a training ground source told Sunday People.
“Michael Carrick is one of the senior players but he was saying he wished he was 25 again and facing a few years playing for Mourinho.
“The place is absolutely buzzing.
“The previous manager was very thorough in his planning and preparation and on the training ground but it all felt a little bit regimented.
“Some of the staff have already nicknamed Jose ‘Mr Meticulous’ because of his attention to detail – but the mood feels a lot lighter, albeit super-professional.
Why Man United starlets face shirt number changes under Mourinho
“The players know Jose will be demanding, but they are excited. They want to be competing for the league title again.”

Serena-and-Venus-Wimbledon2016
Serena and Venus Williams defeated fifth seeds, Timea Babos of Hungary and Yaroslavia Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3 6-4 on Saturday, to claim their sixth doubles title at Wimbledon. It was also their 14th doubles triumph as a team at the majors and their 22nd in 23 finals overall.
The only time the American sisters lost a doubles final in 1999, was in San Diego.
“It’s awesome to win another doubles at Wimbledon,” Serena said.
Venus added: “I never want to make a mistake. I don’t want to let Serena down. She brought the energy from the singles on to the doubles court.”
The two siblings are expected to feature at this year’s Olympic Games.
Portugal win Euro2016
Portugal overcame an early injury blow to Cristiano Ronaldo, to beat hosts France and win the 2016 European Championship. Ronaldo lasted only 25 minutes of the game in Saint-Denis, before he succumbed to injury and was replaced by Ricardo Quaresma.
Although Didier Deschamps men controlled most of the match, they failed to score in 90 minutes, with goalkeeper Rui Patricio in inspired form.
The sucker punch came in the 109th minute, as another Portugal substitute smashed in the ball from long range.
For Ronaldo and his team, it is sweet revenge, after they lost the 2004 final on home soil to Greece. This is also their first major title.
